“Pedagogical Matterings”

Learn more about “Art Matterings”, the space emerged in collaboration with graduate students in Art Education during my special topics course, during the spring of 2023, at Virginia Commonwealth University.

This course, was inspired by a double sense of mattering: “To matter”, inspired by abolitionist educator Bettina Love, and the emphasis of the interconnection between matter and care theorized by Donna Haraway. The term “Pedagogical Mattering” comes from Natalie Loveless’ book “How to Make Art at the end of the World”, 2020, p. 3

We asked:

  • Who and what matter? Why?

  • What seems impossible?

  • How to can art practices help give materiality to what matters to us, even when it seems impossible?
